Salesians of South Asia Gather for Youth Ministry Meeting in Siliguri

The Regional Meeting of Youth Ministry Delegates of South Asia, along with sector and network heads, was held at Salesian College, Siliguri Campus, from October 31 to November 4. The gathering brought together Salesian Youth Ministry Delegates and leaders from across South Asia for a time of reflection, communion, and collaboration in their shared mission of accompanying young people.

The meeting opened with the arrival and reception of delegates on October 31, followed by an inaugural programme and social evening. Fr. John Christy (INM) led the opening prayer, and Fr. Joseph Pauria SDB, Provincial of Kolkata, warmly welcomed the General Councillor and the visiting team from Rome. He expressed his joy in hosting the event during the Province’s Centenary celebrations of Salesian presence in Kolkata.

In his inaugural address, Fr. Rafael Bejarano SDB, General Councillor for Youth Ministry, urged delegates to foster unity and cooperation as sector heads and mission leaders. He emphasized the development of shared indicators to create new opportunities for the most marginalized youth. Stressing the need for collaboration across all levels of the Salesian network, he outlined the department’s six-year goals—highlighting the importance of data reporting, policy formulation, and sustained engagement with young people. “We must create spaces for the young to approach us,” he said, encouraging Salesians to welcome them “with love and gratitude.”

The sessions began on November 1 with a Lectio Divina led by Fr. Francisco Cervantes, followed by the Eucharistic celebration presided over by Fr. Bejarano. The day included discussions on the roles of Youth Ministry Delegates in coordination with provincials and commissions. Subsequent days featured presentations on pastoral priorities from General Chapter 29, socio-political commitment in youth ministry, and mental health awareness. Fr. Joebeth Vivo spoke on the “Way Forward for the Salesian Youth Synod,” while Ms. Antonella Sinagoga conducted a session on Promoting Positive Mental Health.

The final day included sessions on Pastoral Research and Methodology by Fr. Michal Vojtas (UPS) and cultural exposure visits to Oodlabari and Patibari, where participants interacted with youth and parish communities.
